山魈属猴科的一种哺乳动物，是世界上最大的猴科灵长动物，体型健壮，头大而长，鼻骨两侧各有1块骨突起，表面呈淡蓝色，因山魈面部似鬼魅状，遂称为“山中之鬼”。山魈尾部粗短，体毛主要为深灰色，夹杂着黑色和红黄色的毛发，并具有橙色的胡须、红色的鼻和嘴唇。
